HTTPS, explained simply What an SSL Certificate Actually Does
An SSL certificate encrypts the connection between your visitor's browser and the server your website runs on. Without it, everything sent to your site travels as plain text across the network. Anyone positioned between the two, such as someone running an open Wi-Fi hotspot, can read it. That includes contact form submissions, login details and anything typed into a checkout.
When a certificate is installed, your site loads over https:// and browsers display a padlock instead of a warning. Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Edge all mark plain HTTP pages as Not Secure, and that label appears right next to your domain name in the address bar.
SSL has become a baseline expectation rather than an upgrade. Payment gateways will not process transactions on an unencrypted page. Google has confirmed HTTPS is used as a ranking signal, and many browser features, including geolocation and service workers, simply refuse to run without it.
This is why we do not sell SSL separately. Every hosting plan at HeroHosty ships with a free certificate that installs and renews on its own, so your site is encrypted from the day it goes live.
Nothing to configure How Your Free SSL Is Issued
- Point your domain to our nameservers
- Or add an A record to your hosting IP
- Wait for DNS to propagate
- cPanel AutoSSL detects the domain
- Certificate is requested automatically
- Installation needs no action from you
- Your site loads over HTTPS
- Renewal happens before expiry
- Force HTTPS from cPanel if needed
Already hosting with us and still seeing a Not Secure warning? It is almost always mixed content, where the page itself loads over HTTPS but an image, script or stylesheet is still requested over HTTP. Our help centre covers how to find and fix those references, or raise a ticket and we will look at it for you.
DV, OV and EV Which Certificate Type Do You Need?
All three encrypt traffic to exactly the same strength. The only difference is how much of your identity the certificate authority verifies before issuing.
| Type | What is verified | Best suited to | Included free |
|---|---|---|---|
| Domain Validation (DV) | Control of the domain name only | Blogs, portfolios, business sites, most stores | Yes, with every plan |
| Organisation Validation (OV) | Domain control plus registered company details | Companies wanting their name in the certificate | Install your own |
| Extended Validation (EV) | Domain control plus a fuller legal and operational check | Banks, insurers, large regulated businesses | Install your own |
For the overwhelming majority of websites a DV certificate is the correct choice, which is why it is the one we include. If your business needs OV or EV, buy it from any certificate authority and install it from cPanel under SSL/TLS, or send it to our support team and we will install it on your account.
